Margie Day - Chronological 1950 - 1969

Missing her first solo record on Decca: Old Time Lovin' / I Like What You're Doing. Both recorded 2 September 1953 and released on Decca 48330. One became available about five years or so ago on ebay or someplace, but it went for a lot more dosh than I was willing to fork over. Also, I have a note in my folder, and I don't recall the source, but it says she may have appeared on a record back in 1947 on Savoy 657. A song called Near You by Fours Bars & A Melody. I've never come across that one so have never heard it so whether that is factual or not I'm not sure.
Of course Margie began her recording career with The Griffin Brothers band before going solo in 1953. She had about 7 or so releases in the mid-50's on Decca, Deluxe and Cat before returning in the early 60's for a few more one-offs and changing direction. How about her 1963 Martay side Tell Me In The Sunlight? The sessions book shows it being recorded in NYC, but to me it sounds like a 1963 Jackie DeShannon / Gold Star Studio outtake. Anyway, then Margie released a couple pop diva-type LP's on RCA in the late 60's. 66 tracks and just over 3 hours of music.

  1. Looking forward to listening to this. A couple of points, while I remember:
The ‘Near You’ session was recorded on 26 August 1947 and the single was given a very bad review in Cash Box 11 Oct 1947 (page 115) – needless to say the other tracks weren’t released.
I’m curious about what the “sessions book” is that you refer to for the Martay single. The Cash Box review on 21 March 1964 is solid. An early 1964 recording date is more likely and, considering the proto-Walker Brothers involvement, Gold Star is highly probable.
    Keep it up.

    1. Most likely Soul Discography Vol. 1. Yes, very different sound for Margie.
