Petula Clark 87!
Happy 87th birthday to Petula Clark today. What do most people lucky enough to reach an 87th birthday do on that day? I doubt any are doing what Petula is, appearing on a London West End stage during a 5-month run of Mary Poppins. Not bad for someone that began performing on radio and the stage at the age of 9! 87 - 9 = 78 = living legend.
Radio, the stage, television, recordings, appeared in about 20 films.....all by the age of 20. Chucks it in, moves to France and becomes a French performing and recording star. Hooks up with Tony Hatch in the 60's and knocks out hit-after-hit as a 30-something mother of two, stars in two late-60's smash film musicals (Finian's Rainbow, Goodbye Mr Chips) and has her own NBC special here in the US. Logs thousands of performances on West End and Broadway stages and still gives singing performances around the world. She was in my city about a year ago and packed the performance center.
There used to be a video on YT of her performing I Dreamed A Dream in French with an orchestra and large chorus that would give anyone goosebumps. Unfortunately, it's been removed.
I'm not big on show tunes, something that's sort of her staple, but I've always enjoyed a lot of songs from her pop star period and created a playlist for myself of the songs I like.
I shared half of it on another blog last year (they had rules about number of songs or something) and hundreds of people downloaded it.
Here is the complete simply-tagged playlist, 64 songs in an approximate chronological order, all excellent quality and plays for three hours at the same volume level.
I keep it on a flash drive that I can plug into my home theater, boombox, or car radio any time I need a melodic pick-me-up. It has logged many miles with me on my trips over to the east coast of Florida to visit with friends and family. Perhaps do Petula on the drive over and plug in my Dusty playlist drive for the ride back. Helps keeps me awake on the boring drives across the Florida outback.
